Master Study

Well, I ran out of things to do at work today, apparently. So I figured, why waste time? I've been wanting to practice some anatomy for a long time, and I've never really done a master study while drawing(I know, not in art school, right?). So I found an image of a Mickeylangelo drawing(looks like one for the good ol' chapel), and just tried to draw it best I could. I took it home and finished.

I was actually pleased with the results. I figured out that I suck at knees and hands, but I got to really work on some abdominal muscles–something I've never been very good at making look realistic. It was great fun and great practice!

Hello again!

I haven't been active for a while. Probably because I'm a horrible, horrible blogger. But I'm working at it!

Anyways, I was perusing the internets and found this interview that has some cool pieces in it. Fun vector artist/illustrator who provides his fair share of inspiration!

I need to have work on here soon... Which means I need to do some. Oh! and I need to update on my job. I have pictures.

Sooo...

Remember that post about two below this one?

The one where I said I was more successful on my own?

Yeah... well, I got a job about a week after that post. Looks like I'm headed to Richmond :p.

Nickelodeon changes logo.

So it seems that Nickelodeon is changing their logo from the splat thing that we all know and love (at least those of us who were age six in '93, and have very fond memories of Rugrats, Doug, Are You Afraid of the Dark, and the list goes on), to that new, rounded typeface look that will be a cliché in about two or three years. I can't say that I blame them for the change, it's about time. I've just got this special little place in my heart for that old 90's charm, and remember the days when unsuspecting teenagers and adults would get splattered by gallons of green ooze that would magically pour from the ceiling.

I'll miss you, splat.

Hmm...

So, this is my fifth or sixth cup of coffee today...

The fact that I can't remember, but know it's that high, scares me.

Taking a break from work.

Freelancing has been very interesting so far.

I recently landed a great job to prove myself with, with the possibility of returning business. 4-page promo brochure for a company in Blacksburg. I was excited for the possibility, and after about two or three weeks of waiting for info to start, I dove into it. It's quite fun to discover my own work process. It needs a huge amount of refining and discipline, but that comes with time and experience. The job has been going well, and I'm close to done with my second idea after about 10 hours of work or so. Rock on.

After I landed this job and worked for a while, I realized that all my efforts this summer have been leading to a freelance career. My internship was for a couple who worked for themselves, and a lot of what I learned from them was about freelance business. I got some great chances to network myself to local companies, and they turned out great. I haven't been putting a lot of effort into my full-time job search either, but that's mainly because I need to have a really tight self-presentation. I need better work, and a really slick web presence. Slowly, but surely, it's getting there. Speaking of web stuff, teaching myself html is a blast so far, and I'm slowly picking that up too. Working on this blog was a good chance to practice. Everything web is just fascinating.

I don't think I'd mind having a 9-to-5, salary gig, but at this point I'm more successful on my own. I just think it's interesting how it all worked out, even before I graduated. This just makes figuring out what to do with life a little more complicated. I'd love to get out and move somewhere else for a while, but there just seems to be more going on for me right here.

First and only real drawing I've done this summer...

I know, I know, I should be doing more. At least that's what I think. I want to make this a habit though. I've seen some "sketch blogs" and it has inspired me. I hope to do this more and track progress through pieces and things. Go web 2.0 mentality!

As far as quality goes, I think I did pretty well. I'm happy with it proportionally, though I think I should have gotten a bit more contrast in the very dark areas before I scanned it. I'm trying to get into the habit of making a precise drawing and mapping out all my areas of contrast before I jump into coloring. Check back and see the vectored version sometime soon!
